Tally is Too Heavy for Your Shop. Here's a Lighter Way.

Tally Prime runs only on Windows computers. There is no official Android or iOS app. If your shop computer is off, if you are at the godown, if you are travelling, or if your staff calls asking about stock — you cannot check anything. You cannot create a bill from your phone, you cannot see pending orders, and you cannot check what is in stock. In 2025, a business tool that cannot be accessed from a smartphone is a serious operational handicap for any shop owner who is not always sitting at their desk.

Tally Prime Single User license costs ₹18,000 as a one-time fee. That is before you factor in the Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) of ₹5,400/year to keep receiving updates. If you want two computers to run Tally simultaneously — add another ₹18,000. Many small businesses also pay a Tally dealer or a part-time accountant to set it up and maintain it, adding further cost. Compare this to Stock Register at ₹900–₹3,600/year with no setup fee, no dealer, and no AMC. The cost difference is significant for a shop doing moderate volumes.

Tally's entire interface is organised around accounting concepts: voucher types (payment, receipt, journal, contra), ledger groups, cost centres, debit and credit entries. These are concepts a chartered accountant uses every day, but a shop owner who studied up to Class 12 and runs a hardware or grocery store has no reason to know them. To create a sales bill in Tally, you navigate through menus that assume accounting knowledge. Training a new billing staff member on Tally takes weeks. Stock Register requires no accounting background — the workflow is: select party, add items, create bill. That is it.

Tally Prime includes payroll management, TDS deduction tracking, cost centre budgeting, interest calculations, multi-currency support, and consolidated financial statements for groups of companies. These are powerful features — for companies that need them. A textile shop, a medical store, or a building materials wholesale business will never touch 80% of Tally's menu. Yet the complexity of all these features is present in the interface every time you open the software, making navigation slower and more confusing for the tasks you actually do every day.

Tally stores all your business data locally on the hard drive of the computer where it is installed. If that computer crashes, if the hard drive fails, if the machine is stolen, or if there is a power surge — your billing history, stock records, and account books may be lost permanently. Tally does support manual backups to a USB drive or network folder, but this requires someone to actively remember to do it. Stock Register stores all data in the cloud with automatic backups — your data is safe even if you drop your phone in water.
